London is thought to be an expensive city. That however isn't all that true anymore. Especially if you're coming from a Euro-area, the exchange rate for pounds is really advantageous. When the rate has been 1.50 euros per pound for many years, today you can get one pound for 1.10 euros.
Also it depends a lot where you're shopping and which hotels you stay in. There are many affordable shops in London and also finding a nice, cheap hotel isn't that difficult nowadays.
